World AIDS Day a moment to reflect on the challenge of TB/HIV

28 November 2007 -- Geneva -- On the occasion of World AIDS Day 2007, Dr Marcos Espinal, Executive Secretary of the Stop TB Partnership, called on all countries, working with their partners, to do more to address the massive global epidemic of tuberculosis (TB) among people living with HIV. "Too many people are dying needlessly as a result of TB, which is still a leading cause of death among people living with HIV. Every day that goes by without action adds to the unacceptable death toll in people and communities affected by TB and HIV," he said.

A WORLD COPD DAY SUPPORT ACTIVITY

NOVEMBER 14, 2007

Radio Advertisement/Script (1)

Do you know what is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide, ranking alongside HIV/AIDS? It is COPD, which means Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. COPD is a devastating, life-threatening chronic lung disease, that kills nearly 3 million people a year worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. COPD affects mainly smokers over age 40. The first symptoms are cough, sputum production, and breathlessness while exercising.

Today is World COPD Day!

So, if you are a current or ex-smoker and you are over age 40 and you have these symptoms, see your family physician immediately for a simple lung function test. Ask your doctor about COPD – there is medication and treatment available. You may be breathless, but you are not helpless in fighting against this disease.

Even It’s a smoker’s cough, nothing to worry about.

I’m just getting older, and that’s why I get out of breath going up a flight of stairs.

It’s the little everyday things like shopping, showering, and dressing that have gotten so much harder than they used to be.

Do these sound like thoughts you’ve often had?

If you’re over 40 and have a history of smoking, you may have a life-threatening disease that will get worse if not treated.

Talk to your doctor about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or C-O-P-D.

COPD is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide, killing nearly 3 million people every year, according to the World Health Organization. Yet many people have this lung disease and don’t know it.

That’s why today, November 14, is World COPD Day—to let people know that COPD can be treated. The earlier a diagnosis is made, the more effective the treatment will be.

if you’re breathless, you’re not helpless. You can help yourself if you have COPD!
