28 November 2007 -- Geneva -- On the occasion of World AIDS Day 2007, Dr Marcos Espinal, Executive Secretary of the Stop TB Partnership, called on all countries, working with their partners, to do more to address the massive global epidemic of tuberculosis (TB) among people living with HIV. "Too many people are dying needlessly as a result of TB, which is still a leading cause of death among people living with HIV. Every day that goes by without action adds to the unacceptable death toll in people and communities affected by TB and HIV," he said.

Do you know what is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide, ranking alongside HIV/AIDS? It is COPD, which means Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. COPD is a devastating, life-threatening chronic lung disease, that kills nearly 3 million people a year worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. COPD affects mainly smokers over age 40. The first symptoms are cough, sputum production, and breathlessness while exercising.

Today is World COPD Day!

So, if you are a current or ex-smoker and you are over age 40 and you have these symptoms, see your family physician immediately for a simple lung function test. Ask your doctor about COPD – there is medication and treatment available. You may be breathless, but you are not helpless in fighting against this disease.
